Compare printers’ electrical consumption meaningfully

24 February 2025

Only on DMO!

Compare printers' and MFPs’ electrical consumption meaningfully: the new TEC(DMO) field shows electrical consumption for a monthly volume of 5,000 prints. This will help you sell faster machines!

The Energy Star TEC can be very misleading. We see this figure everywhere, but it is based on varying monthly volumes:  the faster a machine’s speed, the more they make it print when they are testing it. In the real world, a customer has a monthly volume which does not increase just because they buy a faster printer!

If your customer buys a faster machine, they will use LESS electricity, not more, as the TEC would have you believe.

Now you can use DMO to sell the more expensive option, while still helping to reduce the customer’s electricity bill!

The same machine with the same fuser unit but running at a higher speed will finish printing more quickly, thus saving electricity.

The table shows the electrical consumption of series of identical machines clocked to run at different speeds printing a monthly volume of 5,000 prints, calculated on the basis of 17 14-page jobs per day in a 21-day month comprising 5 7.5-hour working days per week, including downtime between jobs, at night and at weekends, as per Energy Star TEC3 methodology.

The calculations are modelled from DataMaster data including warm-up times, first-page-out times, print speeds, and public data on printing equipment’s electrical consumption in all modes: in-use, ready and sleep collated for the DataMaster Online database.
